3D X-Ray Used to Determine Internal Porosity Without Destructive Testing

Traditionally, to determine porosity within a given part would require destructive testing. Industrial CT scanning is a NDT method utilizing x-ray technology that can detect internal features and flaws without destroying the part. Industrial CT scanning (3D x-ray) is used to detect flaws inside a part such as porosity, inclusions or cracks, before a failure can occur. CT scanning allows you to inspect and locate problem areas inside a component, and find the point of origin of a failure without needing to disassemble the components.

Metal casting and moulded plastic components are typically prone to porosity because of cooling processes, transitions between thick and thin walls and material properties. Void inspection can be used to find, measure and analyze voids inside plastic or metal components.  A measurement of each void volume is stored in a chart, and can be exported into an excel file. The supplied freeware shareware software allows the user to see where the largest void is (or any void) as well as provides an overall percentage of the porosity.
