How is CT Scanning Different from Optical 3D Scanning?

Similar to a 3D scanner such as white light or laser scanner, a CT system is a non contact scan. The benefit of CT scans over traditional 3D scanners is that internal geometry is also collected in 3Dwithout any damage to the part or any pressure or fixtures applied.

During the CT scan, the part is placed on a rotary table. Note that there is no fixtureing required. As the part rotates the cone of x-rays produce about 1300 2D images with is collected on a flat panel detector. The 2D images are then processed to create a 3D volume rendering of the external and internal geometries of the part.
